Although Mary did not own a horse until adulthood she spent many hours playing horse. A favourite game was making baler twine harness with a friend and roaming around the neighbourhood as horse and driver.
Mary’s personal journey of healing has contributed to an understanding of the profound impact experimental learning can have on supporting one to facilitate their own healing and holistic journey. Her commitment to holistic learning and healing began when she completed the Enki Teacher training program in 1995. she created and ran an alternative elementary school on her farm for 8 children. She then homeschooled her 3 children through to high school completion. Mary and her family raised the family food and maintained a herd of Romney/Lincoln sheep for fibre. Mary enjoys fibre arts such as knitting, weaving, and spinning. In 2007 she started a yarn/fibre company that specialized in fairly traded and sustainable products, which were sold at several farmers’ markets in northern NS.
Mary provided a safe and loving home for foster children for 10 years. She shared her home with children 6 months – 18 years, which developed her skills as a sensitive listener, advocate and understanding complex trauma. Mary obtained her Bachelor of Social Work in 2013. She works as a Long Term Worker within the Mi’kmaq Family and Children Services. This position has developed her understanding of Cultural sensitivity and the effects of intergenerational trauma. She will complete her Masters of Social Work from an Indigenous perspective in 2020.
Mary’s journey of healing with her equine family and her desire to offer this experience, an opportunity to the community, led her to complete the Facilitated Equine Experimental Learning (FEEL) program in 2019 at Horse Spirit Connections. Mary has also completed the Advance Feel Program in 2016. She offers the Feel experience with her 3 horses – Pru, Anna, and Owen. They share a 125-acre farm that radiates peace, safety and fosters healing. Offering individual experiences with horses where potential and possibility grow.
