Mélanie Rishwain
B.Ed., M.Ed/Counselling., RP., CCC., FEEL.

Mélanie is dedicated to the well-being of humans, animals and nature. For as long as she can remember, she has been driven to protect and help those in need. She is a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She is also a member of the Canadian Counsellor and Psychotherapist Association and a certified Facilitated Equine Experiential Learning (FEEL) Facilitator.

When Mélanie first encountered horses at age 12, she fell in love with these majestic and authentic creatures. The day after she graduated from university, she partnered up with Rose, a kind, bold and curious little Quarter Horse. Rose travelled with Mélanie and her husband from province to province and were best friends for many years. This was the beginning of Mélanie’s lifelong journey walking alongside horses.

As a child, Mélanie experienced many obstacles, particularly with learning disabilities. Through her own experiences, she has learned how to persevere and overcome challenges, obtaining a degree in Education and a Master of Education, specializing in Counselling. She has since worked with people in vulnerable groups, including those with intellectual deficiencies, learning disabilities, mental health disorders, and with people who require support to help manage difficult situations. Her many years of experience have taught her that devotion, unconditional acceptance and authenticity are crucial for building successful work relationships.

Since 2012, Mélanie has had her private psychotherapy practice on her 17-acre property. While working with Mélanie, clients have the choice to be in contact with nature and animals and can choose from different psychotherapy approaches. She offers traditional talk therapy in an office where clients can enjoy watching the horses from a spacious window. Clients can also choose to do their session outside, walking on trails or sitting by the small lake, when the weather permits.

However, the most sought-after approach is equine experiential psychotherapy with her horses: Cutter, the big-hearted man, Misty, the sensitive exuberant, Jayzee, the sweet independent, and Annie, the lady sunshine grazer.

Mélanie also includes her dogs in her therapeutic practices; Willow, the Dachshund, and Meia, the Portuguese Water Dog. Both dogs love to be invited into the office by clients. Willow likes to be on the client’s laps; Meia spends most of her time at the client’s feet, belly up. Mélanie’s herd of horses and dogs is peaceful and friendly, and each member has its role to play. They are the best therapists in town.
